Fin Fang Foom’s Monomyth

Monomyth is part of the mythical narrative with the hero emerging victorious, but changed. Think Luke Skywalker standing proud before Princess Leia, being presented with a medal; still a brash young man, but beginning to understand the force.

That’s a lot of hogwash for me to just say that it’s an awesome month for music as Chapel Hill’s Fin Fang Foom is dropping Monomyth, their 3rd LP for Lovitt Records and first release in about a hundred years (give or take). The trio of Eddie Sanchez on guitars, keys and vocals, Michael Triplett on guitar and Mike Glass on drums, are true masters of the epic discordant soundscape. All at once you can imagine future-war battlefields of a dead moon, the Gothic American South of the 1890s, Paris Hilton’s bedroom… all places of immense pain and weariness. This is one band that a description fails to due justice. Faith No More’s “Ricochet” filtered through Joy Division’s “Atmosphere” makes the most sense to me. Sample the first single of the album, “Magnetic North” here for free and see for yourself.
